Japan: Japan Releases Draft 2021 Forest and Forestry Basic Plan

On April 26, 2021, Japan's Forestry Agency released the draft of the new Forest and Forestry Basic Plan, which is due for revision in 2021. The plan aims to increase the domestic 2030 wood consumption to 42 million cubic meters log-equivalent, a 40 percent increase over 2019. Mexico: Mexico Organic Law 'LPO' Enforcement in 2021

On December 26, 2020, Mexico published a measure that requires most organic raw materials and bulk products to be certified to Mexico's Organic Law (LPO) standards by June 26, 2021. The Measure includes an annex that lists the products which will require proof of LPO certification at the border. While USDA has requested an extension of the June 26, 2021 deadline, Mexico has not approved an extension and U.S. stakeholders should prepare for compliance on June 26, 2021. Mexico's organics regulator, the National Service for Animal and Plant Health, Food Safety and Quality (SENASICA), is fully responsible for certifying and enforcing the LPO requirements. This report contains a summary of SENASICA's public statements on this Measure and contact information for parties seeking additional information.

Morocco: Moroccan Notification on Preserved Tomatoes Characteristics

South Africa: South African Small Maple Syrup Market May Present Niche Prospects for United States Suppliers

There are no known plantations for sugar maple trees and maple syrup production in South Africa. While the market is relatively small compared to the United States, it may present niche prospects for U.S. maple exports. South Africa has been a net importer of maple syrup since 2015, and imports in 2020 were valued at US$647,729 (109 Metric Tons (MT)). Year-to-date imports up to March 2021 have already increased fivefold in comparison to the same period in 2020. Canada was the leading supplier of maple syrup and accounted for 74 percent of the total imports in 2020. Imports from the United States have declined from a peak of 49 MT in 2011, to less than 1 MT in 2020. Notably, real maple syrup is considered expensive in the South African local market, and there are several alternatives which are at least 8 times cheaper.
