Good Sunday evening, friends. Hello to the three-day weekend, and to the Memorial Day quietness as we honor those who lost their lives in military service to our beautiful, heartbreaking, ever-evolving nation.
One of the ways I am spending my weekend is with Stephen Satterfield's brilliant feast of a Netflix show, High on the Hog. Have you watched it yet?
A very good use of an extra weekend morning is the focaccia recipe of another Netflix-propelled food star, Samin Nosrat. (Yes, she won our showdown; anyone surprised?)
Our big weekend feature is with Sheldon Simeon. Amelia's interview with him is a delight, ranging from his dinner strategies with four kids, to the influences that inform his rich Hawaiian cooking. Don't sleep on the recipes; two-bite Okinawan doughnuts and this ultra-approachable ahi poke are at the top of my list.
If you're looking for one more thing to grill, we have 50+ grilling recipes here; may I recommend you scroll straight to the end for the grilled Rice Krispies treats?
Also, this is your friendly reminder that Memorial Day is the first day of butter bath corn season.
Speaking of Memorial Day eating, what about drinking? I am a new yet extremely late-to-the-party fan of hard seltzer (I know; I am OLD? I apparently need time to warm up to trendy alcoholic beverages!). Our go-to spirits expert taste-tested her way through over 20 brands, and the blood orange Bravazzi, her top pick, is now chilling in my fridge.
I was captivated by this piece on the revitalization of manoomin, wild rice, in Michigan.
It got truly hot this past week, and as soon as temps bust 90, I yearn for Melona bars, the Korean ice pops that taste more like a honeydew melon than a melon itself.
Have you ever "mind-mapped" your pantry and groceries? I don't think I could keep up with this system, but I really want to try it at least once!
By the way, King Arthur's lemon puff pancake is pure magic.
And last but not least, if you read just one thing from my letter today, let it be this piece by Thao Thai on her mother's Americana-Vietnamese meatloaf, blended families, Growing Pains, and so much more. A five-minute jewel of a read.
See you next week with a very fun and special new project we can't wait to share.
