| | February 07, 2025 | Edition #182 | Hey, Hoophead! | It's shaping up to be a great weekend of women's hoops, just as we like it. South Carolina and UCLA will both look to hold onto their spots at the top of their respective conferences, but neither will have it easy against ranked opponents. | Elsewhere in the WNBA, the New York Liberty are already looking ahead, giving their new head coach some much-needed help. So let's get into it! |

| | | | | Ex-WNBA Stars Ready to Steer the Liberty Ship |
|
| | After starting the 2025 WNBA season 9-0, it was anything but smooth sailing for the New York Liberty, and we all saw the cracks begin to show. | Injuries derailed their push to defend the title, and a first-round loss to the Phoenix Mercury brought sweeping changes. | Sandy Brondello lost her job and soon headed to Toronto, bringing along her husband and top assistant Olaf Lange, as well as video coordinator and player development coach Brian Lankton. | Oh, if that wasn't enough, another one of the Liberty coaches went on to land a WNBA head coaching job. Check out who. | New York moved quickly, replacing Brondello with former Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco, and now the new-look Liberty is finally starting to take shape. | Yes, this will be DeMarco's first coaching stint in the W, but he is making sure he won't be short on guidance. Former WNBA players Courtney Paris and Kristen Mann have joined his coaching staff, adding valuable league experience. | Paris was an assistant coach with the Chicago Sky last season, and Mann previously worked in basketball development with the Connecticut Sun. | Along with them, DeMarco has also brought in another Warriors coach in Will Sheehey, while Addi Walters joins the staff after serving as an assistant with the Iowa Wolves and working with the Bahamian national team. | These could be exciting times in New York. The blend of WNBA and NBA experience could be exactly what helps the Liberty push its way back to the top. |

| | | | First Place There for the Taking |
|
| | A treat awaits this weekend. | We open with No. 3 South Carolina hosting No. 19 Tennessee, and yeah, the prize is sole possession of first place in the SEC. | The Gamecocks are rolling right now. Dawn Staley's side is on a four-game winning streak since that surprise loss to Oklahoma, while Kim Caldwell's Tennessee is back on track after back-to-back losses to UConn and Mississippi State. | Yes, Tennessee still leads the all-time series 51–17, but lately it's been all South Carolina. The Gamecocks have won nine of the last 10, and heading into this one, South Carolina will be the favorite. | And wait until you hear the injury update Staley shared on Ta'Niya Latson and Agot Makeer. Gamecocks fans, this should get you excited. | So, can Joyce Edwards stay red-hot and lead South Carolina to another win, or will former Gamecock Talaysia Cooper help Tennessee pull off the upset? Catch it Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. But there's another high-stakes matchup at the same time. | We also have No. 2 UCLA Bruins heading to No. 8 Michigan Wolverines, holding just a one-game edge in conference play. The result could go a long way in deciding the Big Ten regular-season title. | Since the loss to Texas on Nov. 28, we've seen the Bruins go on a 16-game winning streak, quickly cementing themselves as the team to beat. | On the other hand, the Wolverines have just three losses this season, two of which came by single possessions at neutral sites against UConn and Vanderbilt. | We still haven't seen anyone push the unbeaten Huskies quite like Michigan did in November, thanks to this crazy performance by Syla Swords. | A lot has been said about the impact of Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, Gianna Kneepkens, and Gabriela Jaquez, and rightly so. But if Swords shows up the way she did against UConn, Michigan's odds improve dramatically. | "All the Metrics Went Up!" WNBA Franchise Owner Credits Caitlin Clark For Driving League-Wide Growth |

| | Which Game This Weekend Are You Most Excited For? | |
| | | | Chaos Erupts in Unrivaled |
|
| | Everything was set up for a statement night. Paige Bueckers and Breeze BC had a clear opportunity to establish themselves as championship contenders against a Hive BC side that has spent most of the season at the bottom of the standings. | And it looked like this was going to be a walk in the park. Breeze BC took a 12-point lead into halftime, and even stretched it to 15 early in the third quarter. But as we all know, in basketball, the moment you get comfortable, things start to go wrong. | Hive BC came back roaring in the second half behind Kelsey Mitchell, going on a 14–0 run and outscoring Breeze BC 27–16 in the third quarter. Mitchell's 22-point night, capped by Sonia Citron's ridiculous game-winner over Cameron Brink, sealed Hive BC's third win of the season. | You could see the frustration written all over Paige Bueckers as the shot dropped. She did everything she could to keep Breeze BC alive in the second half, scoring 13 of their 16 points in the third quarter. | Bueckers ended the night with 28 points, but despite her best efforts, it wasn't enough to stop the collapse as Breeze BC fell 70–68. | Elsewhere, we got another unexpected twist. The Lunar Owls were missing Marina Mabrey, Rebecca Allen, and Napheesa Collier, yet somehow, the game against Laces BC stayed far tighter than anyone anticipated. | Even after building a 26–15 first-quarter lead, Laces BC couldn't shake the Lunar Owls. Aaliyah Edwards just wouldn't go away, leading a response that saw the Owls win the next two quarters and keep the game tight until the very end. | But when you run into a game-changer like Alyssa Thomas, there's nothing you can do but watch. You have to see how she erased every last comeback hope. | The game ended 74–70 in favor of Laces BC, making them the first team to book their spot in the playoffs this season. | Think Records Don't Last Forever? | | | Unrivaled has already proven plenty of its doubters wrong, pulling in a record crowd in Philly and showing there's genuine interest in women's basketball beyond traditional women's sports markets. | And we got a real glimpse of its global stature when Usain Bolt pulled up courtside at the Sephora Arena with his girlfriend to cheer on the women athletes. | From snapping photos with the athletes courtside to racing Dearica Hamby's daughter at halftime, the fastest man on the planet managed to captivate everyone inside the arena. | But before leaving, he named his favorite player – and even admitted he was ready to buy season tickets just to watch her play. Any guesses who it is? Check it out. |
