I've always been a little stymied by the fact that sports-watching is such a huge part of our lives, and yet despite all of that I myself keep it compartmentalized and pretty much off to the side (okay, sidelined). From a verrry young age, our whole family made our way over to campus at MSU for many many games, especially football, basketball. I'm surprised by how little I actually have learned about the games and their nuances! Could it be my focus on the snacks, be it out the back end of the station wagon or from the concessions or, for big game experiences like the Super Bowl or the Olympics, my own kitchen while raucous watching goes on in the other room?
Shaheen gang cheering on the Spartans. No snacks in hand, to my disappointment.
On this eve of games galore (not to mention awards programs), I present this week some great recipes to consider as you think of all of the noshing to be done in the presence of all of the disciplined rigor on the screen! Some of these are simple handful crunchers (hi, Olive Oil Chex Mix with 7 Spice) and some are mouthwatering meatball-style goodies like this that you can make, even freeze, and cook off or reheat when you light up your TV. Dips, of course, lots of those.
Scroll down for a smattering, and jump over to my collection of Game Day recipes for a view of many good ideas.
Much of the savory recipe flavor secret is in the spices. They deliver so much to the tastebuds, which alleviates the need for the extra salt-butter-stuff we avoid. The spices in the shop are simply A++!
