Since moving back to Japan, I've really started to feel the seasons through food—what I cook, how I prep, and even how I eat. Now that it's getting hot and humid, I've been craving all the classic Japanese summer dishes that help cool you down. Think chilled somen noodles, anmitsu with plenty of fruit and jelly, and other light, refreshing meals that make the most of summer flavors. In this week's recipes, I'm sharing some of my go-to seasonal favorites—simple, satisfying, and perfect for staying cool. Let's embrace summer, one bite at a time!☀️π₯’π
Somen
Somen are thin, white Japanese wheat noodles served chilled with a light dipping sauce—perfect for hot summer days. Quick to cook and very simple, this refreshing dish is often served with green onions, ginger, and a variety of thinly sliced toppings for a satisfying and cooling meal.
Anmitsu is a classic Japanese summer dessert made with cubes of kanten jelly, sweet red bean paste, fruits, and mochi, all served with a drizzle of black sugar syrup (kuromitsu). Light, colorful, and refreshing—it's the perfect way to cool down on a warm day!
My name is Shihoko. I moved to Australia many years ago from Japan and I missed the food so much that I decided to create my favourite recipes at home and share them with you too.
