| Would-Be Trump Assassin Has NC Connections Ryan Wesley Routh, the man identified as attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump Sunday in West Palm Beach, Florida, is a former resident of Greensboro and has an extensive criminal record in North Carolina. Guilford County records show that Routh, who lived in North Carolina most of his life and attended North Carolina A&T University, was arrested 74 times between 1966 and 2014. He now faces federal gun charges after camping outside Trump’s golf club for nearly 12 hours with an AK-47 style rifle before a Secret Service agent thwarted the potential attack and opened fire. Routh was registered as an unaffiliated voter in North Carolina but supported Trump in 2016. In a 2023 self-published book, Routh encouraged the assassination of Trump and expressed his disdain for Trump’s handling of the Iran nuclear deal. The ongoing investigation has not yet impacted Trump’s campaign schedule, which includes a rally in Wilmington on Saturday. | Tropical Storm Conditions Impact Both Carolinas The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm warnings Sunday from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina. Named Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, the storm brought heavy rainfall and gusty winds to both Carolinas on Monday. Meteorologists gave the storm a 40% chance of becoming Tropical or Subtropical Storm Helene before making landfall. Several school districts in the Wilmington area canceled in-person classes and went to remote learning Monday because of the storm. The system was expected to move inland across the Carolinas through early Wednesday, potentially causing tornadoes, flooding, and power outages. | Threats Targeting NC Schools Being Investigated A series of threats targeting North Carolina schools are under investigation. The latest threat references West Charlotte High School. In Wake County, social media threats against Leesville Elementary, Carrol Magnet Middle, and Sanderson High School were also reported Monday. These incidents follow a string of threats made against schools in Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln counties. Police are also investigating possible threats to schools in Orange, Cumberland, Moore, Wayne, and Edgecombe counties. In all cases, schools are communicating developments with parents.
