A Friday dispatch with tips and tools to help you keep your cooking and eating zones fresh and clean (enough, anyway). |
Those Sheet Pans Aren't Going To Wash Themselves |
I wouldn't say I hate hand-washing dishes, but I definitely need to be in the right mood to enjoy it. Most often, that mood strikes when I have a dining room full of dinner guests or if I'm suddenly expecting unexpected company. The rest of the time, hand washing dishes is a daunting task I've been known to put off until I'm completely out of clean knives, cutting boards, sheet pans, or anything else that shouldn't go in the dishwasher. Treating myself to a new bottle of nice-smelling dish soap certainly helps (and we are getting very close to Pine-Scented Dish Soap Season™, friends!). But setting a whole mood requires a little more than just fancy soap. Below, find the products that motivate me to tackle a pile of dirty dishes even when I really, really, really don't want to. And if you've found any, I'd love to hear about them at emily_farris@condenast.com.

Set the Mood With Music
This portable Bluetooth speaker from Sonos is dustproof, sandproof, and waterproof. It comes in five colors, takes up about as much space as a bottle of dish soap, and can be connected to your smart home system so you can tell Google or Alexa to play HOT TO GO! while you're wrist-deep in hot, sudsy water. |

Protect Your Hands
I'm much more likely to actually hand wash my hand-wash-only dishes when I have a nice pair of dish gloves waiting by the sink. They protect my skin from scalding water and save me from direct contact with unidentified dirty dish sludge. After testing many, my colleagues recommend this luxe $10 pair from Casabella. |

Upgrade Your Dish Towels
It's so satisfying to have a stash of fresh, dry towels when you're hand-washing dishes (and so frustrating when you don't). After testing kitchen towels, my colleague Megan found that waffle weave material is more absorbent—and sometimes quicker to dry—than classic cotton. For drying dishes, she recommends this set from Amazon as an affordable alternative to West Elm's Waffle Organic Towels. |

Fix Your Rusty Dishwasher Rack
If you have a crusty, old dishwasher, sometimes just the simple act of loading it can be a drag. Give your antique appliance a glow up with a good descaling cycle—and then cover those rusty, worn-out rack prong tines with these little plastic caps. They'll make your dishwasher look almost as good as new and protect your plates from scratches. |
