There's nothing that loosens my purse strings quite like being sick. I have a cold right now, and I feel justified throwing money at the problem in a way that's definitely not financially smart. $5 on a ginger turmeric shot that will probably do nothing? Sure. Bone broth from the fancy spot down the street? Yes. And then, of course, there's plenty of free time to browse online sales since I won't be leaving the house. Here are some things I'm considering:
A fancy rice cooker
I just edited a rice cooker buying guide and it convinced me that I need a fancy one that features "fuzzy logic." This cutesy-seeming term is actually a complex mathematical concept. But in the world of rice cookers, it means that the machine constantly assesses the rice's level of doneness. The machine can then adjust factors like temperature in real time, shutting off exactly when you've achieved the perfect texture. I'm dreaming of a comforting egg and rice sick meal. This model from Zojirushi is on sale for 15% off right now, and it repeatedly wins our product tests.
A favorite ice cream maker
Obviously it's nuts to suggest making your own ice cream when you're under the weather, but sore throats make me think about ice cream constantly. Ice cream making is a skill I'd like to acquire this year and I'm contemplating buying this Cuisinart one (on sale for 36% off on Wayfair) from my sick bed (or rather, couch). It's our reigning favorite in multiple product tests.
Popsicle molds
I also view sore throats as an excuse to buy popsicles, but making them at home is far lower lift than making your own ice cream—and this way you can make your dream flavor combos and load them with Vitamin C and antioxidant-rich ingredients that will at least make you feel like you're doing something to solve your sickness. Check out these silicone molds that are on sale for 20% off on Amazon.
