| Historic Rains Close Roads and Strand Drivers In what’s being called a once-in-200-years event, the towns of Carolina Beach, Boiling Springs Lake, and Southport received more than a foot of rain in 12 hours Monday, with Carolina Beach getting an astounding 18 inches. The National Weather Service referred to the Carolina Beach total as a once-in-1,000-years event. In Brunswick County, floodwaters cut off U.S. 17, reaching up to 7 feet in some sections and leaving hundreds of drivers stranded while the water receded. Flooding submerged cars, washed out streets, broke dams, and forced people to spend the night at schools and workplaces. Residents in other parts of the state experienced gusty winds and power outages, in addition to the heavy rains. Rain lightened but continued Tuesday as the system moved out of the area. | Multiple Rodanthe Homes on the Brink of Collapse A WRAL drone captured this video of several Rodanthe homes inching toward a full collapse into the Atlantic Ocean. Erosion, high winds, and king tides are pushing these homes to the brink of destruction as decks separate, septic systems crack open and spill sewage into the water, and planks of wood and rusty nails litter the beach. On Monday, NCDOT closed N.C. Highway 12 on northern Ocracoke Island due to overwash and water on the roadway, and it advised visitors of Rodanthe’s north-end beaches to use caution due to the presence of debris from the threatened structures. The house on Corbina Drive that was featured in the 2008 movie “Nights in Rodanthe” is not one of the threatened structures. It was moved in 2010 to a safe location. | Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day Across NC As Americans celebrate National Cheeseburger Day today, a number of North Carolina restaurants are joining in the fun.
