North Carolina received more than 207,000 absentee ballot requests as of Monday, with 19,000 coming from military and overseas voters.

Last Friday, county boards of elections began distributing absentee ballots to eligible military and overseas citizens who requested them, while ballots for remaining citizens who requested them were sent out Tuesday.

North Carolinians who want to vote by mail still have until Oct. 29 to request an absentee ballot.

Due to a new state law requiring that county elections boards receive mail-in ballots by no later than 7:30 p.m. on election day, the U.S. Postal Service recommends leaving yourself enough time to receive it, fill it out, and return it.

The North Carolina Board of Elections also advises voters to be prepared for the new voter ID requirement this year. Learn more about acceptable voter IDs here.

Air Canada just announced it will double the number of nonstop flights from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Montreal in May, going from 7 to 14 per week.

Between July 2023 and June 2024, the top 10 domestic destinations from RDU were Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Denver, New York, Boston, Orlando, and Miami.

Chataloochee’s growing elk population is creating roadside attractions that require traffic management volunteers May through October in the Oconaluftee section of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Wearing bright yellow vests, the volunteers use radios and orange flags to keep traffic flowing smoothly while protecting elk herds that gather in sight of drivers who slow down to take a closer look.

The volunteer groups also offer elk education to visitors and keep an eye out for bulls. Program costs are covered by Friends of the Smokies donations.
