Click here Friday, 3 May 2024 | Issue 253 © WHO 29 April - 10 MayNinth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for a WHO instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response – resumedIn December 2021, the World Health Assembly established an Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the Constitution of the World Health Organization to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. The ninth meeting of the INB resumed on 29 April in hybrid format and continues until 10 May 2024 to discuss a new pandemic instrument. Representatives of WHO’s 194 Member States are expected to attend. The closing plenary session of the INB is open to WHO Member States, Associate Members, Observers and regional economic integration organizations, as well all relevant stakeholders. The session will be publicly webcast and archived for later viewing. Substantive negotiating sessions will be held in closed format. More info here. Sunday, 5 May World Hand Hygiene DayThe theme this year is the importance of knowledge sharing to prevent the spread of harmful germs. Hand hygiene saves millions of lives every year when used at the right times in health care. WHO will launch the first global guidelines to prevent the occurrence of bloodstream and other infections caused by catheters in minor (peripheral) blood vessels. Over 70% of in-patients require the use of peripherally inserted catheters. These guidelines are intended to improve patient safety. WHO will also launch the first IPC in-service curriculum to support learning and training, and “My 5 Moments: the game”, a collaboration between WHO IPC Unit, the WHO Academy, Marist University and Serious Games Interactive. Health care workers and students will navigate a series of challenges to test their knowledge of the 5 moments and compassionate care in an international alien hospital. Monday, 6 MayWebinar: Public health risk of avian influenza A(H5N1) detected recently in dairy cattle13:00-14:00 CEST The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) clade of viruses which arose in 2020 from previously circulating influenza A(H5Nx) viruses led to unprecedented numbers of deaths in wild birds and in domestic poultry. It spread globally and has been reported in non-avian species including , and most recently in dairy cattle. This has led to widespread concern. On 24th April 2024, WHO, FAO and WOAH published a joint risk assessment. This EPI-WIN webinar will explain the public health risks of the recent avian influenza detected in dairy cattle. Register here Tuesday, 7 May Release of the 2023 Results ReportThe WHO Results Report 2023 presents the progress made during Programme Budget 2022-2023 towards the triple billion targets, while highlighting areas needing further attention. This comprehensive report offers a deep dive into WHO's impact on the ground, linking resources and results transparently, showing how WHO operates and how it works in collaboration with governments and partners to improve health and well-being. The Results Report is a key WHO accountability tool, outlining progress across all WHO offices and highlighting the contribution made by WHO to health outcomes in countries. Tuesday, 7 May Certification Ceremony: Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and Syphilis in 3 Caribbean countriesOn May 7, WHO will certify Belize, Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines for eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV and syphilis. By 2030, one in six people in the world will be 60 years of age or older. As people are living longer with more complex health and social conditions, essential care and support may be needed at some point in life, increasing demand for interventions to provide long-term care.
