Hey reader,
How much do you spend per year on travel?
If you spend a lot, you can definitely cut that down!
If you spend a little, you can travel more without adding to your budget.
How? Through travel credit card points.
I am relatively new to credit card points, but I know enough to help another beginner out!
I spent a lot of time researching how to get started and picked out my very first card.
Since we started using credit card points, Thomas and I have accumulated more than a million points!
That's $10k+ worth of free flights and hotels.
We took a winter trip to Miami, and have done several smaller hotel stays too.
We went on an epic 40th birthday trip to the Four Seasons Anguilla and took our kids to Disney World (I'll be sharing the breakdown of costs in a few days!). We have more trips on points planned too.
You can choose rewards other than travel
Note that you don't have to use points for travel. You can use them on cash back, gift cards, iPads, and more. But your points will go farther if you use them for hotels + flights than they do for cash back. If cash back if your primary goal, check out Cash Freely, the sister site to Travel Freely. Both recommend cards with great current offers.
Learning about credit card points is like learning a new language
It takes time to figure out what cards to get, the dos and don'ts of the game, and how credit card points can save you lots and lots of money.
I am still very much a beginner at this, which is great if you are too because I will speak beginner to you!!
Over the next few days I'll be sharing some tips and best practices to get started (or keep going) accumulating points to travel for free.
Note that the links I use are affiliate links - because one way to get more points is to share with friends ;) You can do that too! And sometimes the best offers are "share with a friend" offers too.
Also note: Some banks' compliance requirements don't allow me to say the name of the bank and the name of the card name I am talking about. Please forgive this "generic" approach I must take to be compliant. Note: Any links you click through will have full details on this information.
Next up: How points and miles work
xx,
Kath
PS. Note that to get into travel rewards, it's very important that you are not carrying a balance month to month or spending more than you otherwise would. Responsible credit card use and solid financial habits are musts.
