Hey there reader!
Today, I want to share another favorite oatmeal recipe: overnight oats or oatmeal in a jar.
No matter what you call it, overnight oats are one of the easiest and cheapest meal prep recipes.
What are overnight oats? It consists of rolled oats soaked in milk or another liquid overnight. There is no cooking or additional preparation needed. In the morning, stir the oats, add more liquid if needed, and enjoy. That's the basic recipe - you can include all kinds of flavoring and ingredients.
I've made many jars of overnight oats over the years - here are some of my suggestions and best tips.
- Rolled oats or old-fashioned oats work the best. Instant oats get too mushy, and steel-cut oats aren't soft enough. Rolled oats work perfectly for overnight oatmeal.
- The liquid I prefer is unsweetened coconut milk or almond milk. However, you can use dairy milk or any milk you choose.
- You can bulk up the protein with regular or Greek yogurt. You only need 1-2 tablespoons per jar.
- I use chia seeds in my overnight oat recipes to increase protein, fiber, and omega 3's fatty acids.
- I only like to make three jars at a time. After three days, I feel like the oats get a little too mushy. However, many readers say they make jars for the week, and the oats are fine.
I just updated my overnight oats tutorial. Check it out if you're looking for step-by-step answers to all your overnight oats questions and my favorite overnight oatmeal recipes.
