Hydrogen powered vehicles: process for attending statutory tests

Whilst hydrogen technology in vehicles is still in its infancy, DVSA have an interim process for the requirements for these vehicles presented at statutory test.

As with gas vehicles (CNG, LNG and LPG), we want to make sure they are leak free before taking them inside the facility.

Responsibilities of the driver

We expect the driver of the vehicle to have a good knowledge of the hydrogen system. They should follow industry best practice and bring with them a calibrated hydrogen specific leak detector and personal monitor.

Our staff will instruct the driver to demonstrate the vehicle is leak free using the supplied monitor before taking it into the facility.

DVSA will continue working with industry and other stakeholders to develop a wider understanding of the use of alternative fuels. We will update the procedures as required.
