5 Foods Most Affected By Inflation

Hi reader,

As a food and budget blogger, food and money are often on my mind.

I was reading this article a while back and found the 5 foods that are hitting records high as inflation continues to go up.

Knowing that these foods are going to cost more, gives you the upper hand to plan around them or be more strategic with your shopping.

Here's what I suggest:

1. Citrus. Oranges are specifically at a higher price than previously. The best way to save on citrus is to buy in season. Which unfortunately is the winter time and we are soon leaving that season behind.

If you can find some great deals before citrus goes out of season, then I highly suggest stocking up and freezing what you can. This tutorial is a great place to start.

2. Bacon and Sausage. Meat in general is at higher prices lately, but processed meats are going up even more. One idea is avoid them and opt for large cuts like whole pork loins or roasts, but if you don't want to completely give up bacon, watch for the sales. Then use this tutorial to freeze the slices separately. Then you can pull out what you need and spread out the cost.

This homemade breakfast sausage and homemade Italian sausage are super delicious. We use these recipes most of the time in order to save money and make sure we're only consuming quality ingredients.

3. Crackers and Bread. This is an easy one to work around. Homemade bread is my go-to suggestion for families who want to save on food. It's not very difficult and a loaf of bread can cost as little as 25 cents! This No-Knead Artisan Bread and 90 Minute Man Bread are easy starter recipes.

Crackers are a little more time consuming and harder to get super crispy, yet my kids devour these homemade cheez-its and this super simple 3 ingredient recipe.

4. Beef and Veal. Finding a local farmer is one of the best ways to save on beef. But if you don't have a large freezer to store a side of beef, then you might have to look into other option. Butcher Box offers high quality beef for a great price. I've really loved using them for our meat every month. Here's my review.

Once you have your beef, it's a smart idea to stretch it as much as possible. Here are some general tips to stretching meat. And here's how to make stretched ground beef. This meal plan uses just two pounds of beef for a whole week!

5. Some Fats and Oils. The fats and oils that are going up are the highly processed ones that aren't that good for you anyway. This means more cooking with butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. Some nut butters will go up as well. However, you can make your own using this tutorial.

Most of these foods can be made from scratch or stretched to make the most of your grocery budget. We're going to dig in deeper to strategies that I've been using to beat inflation next week in the free Fight Inflation Workshop.

I'm so excited to get these strategies out to you so that you can start saving money right away!!
