Land-grant Universities Key in Managing Devastating Emerald Ash Borer Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive insect that threatens to destroy North American ash trees following its accidental introduction from Asia in the 1990s. Since then, efforts have been underway to identify the most effective means of protecting ash trees from attack. In recent years, EAB has become a significant threat to urban and community forests throughout the nation as it kills both stressed and healthy ash trees. Loss of these trees has a staggering economic impact on communities that must spend thousands of dollars to manage or remove infested trees and replace with other species. NIFA Professionals Make Impact at Recent MANRRS Conference A team of 15 NIFA professionals attended the recent Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) National Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. The NIFA team joined other leaders from academia, industry and government working to foster partnerships and provide opportunities for students. A number of USDA agencies joined the NIFA group at the conference. NIFA professionals led two workshops at the conference. Student delegates learned more about the opportunities available to them at NIFA as well as important information on how to apply for fellowships and internships. An Essentials of Grant Writing Process workshop offered chapter advisors information about the NIFA grants process and grant opportunities. Additionally, the team interacted with several hundred student delegates who visited the NIFA booth as part of the MANRRS Career Fair and Expo. As Latino/a farmers increasingly seek pathways to become successful farmers, programs like La Cosecha are vital in supporting the transition into farm business management.
