Nutrition February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to encourage your community to use the Nutrition Facts label. Using the Nutrition Facts label on packaged foods and beverages can help people make informed decisions about their health, in particular their heart health. The Nutrition Facts label can be helpful in identifying the amount of sodium in many packaged foods. Diets higher in sodium are associated with an increased risk of developing high blood pressure, which is a major cause of stroke and heart disease. With over 70% of most dietary sodium coming from packaged and prepared foods, using the Nutrition Facts label can help lower daily sodium intake. Use the following FDA resources to teach your audiences about the Nutrition Facts label and how to use it to make more informed food choices. These fact sheets and videos make it easy to learn about the Nutrition Facts label, including serving size, sodium, and added sugars. The Sodium in Your Diet page highlights ways to use the Nutrition Facts label to reduce sodium intake. The Interactive Nutrition Facts Label allows you to explore the updated label online in greater detail. Agricultural Biotechnology - Feed Your Mind Initiative Check out the latest episode of the Curiosity Daily podcast with FDA expert Dr. Patrick Cournoyer discussing the Feed Your Mind Initiative. During the podcast, Dr. Cournoyer addresses some of the common questions consumers have about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and outlines the science of GMOs. Cosmetics The label of a cosmetic lip product that you just have purchased reads "the formula makes your lips feel hydrated, full, and well." This lip product can either be a lip balm or a lip gloss, which are regulated differently by FDA. Under U.S. law, a product is a cosmetic if, for example, it is intended to cleanse the body or promote attractiveness. If a product is intended to treat or prevent disease, it is a drug, even if it affects the appearance. Sometimes it may be both a cosmetic and a drug, depending upon the intended uses. Please read "How is a product's intended use established?" under Is It a Cosmetic, a Drug, or Both? (Or Is It Soap?) "Lip balm" is intended for use as an Over-the-Counter (OTC) lip protectant/balm (21 CFR 347.3), while "lip gloss" or "lip tint" products that make no healing claims are regulated as cosmetics.
