| Dr. Ernest James Harris, oral history interview, National Agricultural Library, September 14, 2017 | | U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) entomologist Dr. Ernest James Harris (1929-2018) was an international leader in developing methods for eradicating fruit flies and innovative in developing techniques for mass rearing insects used for biological control. His career with the USDA spanned over 40 years and he received several awards, including induction into the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Hall of Fame in 2017. "Dr. Harris' contributions to agriculture continue to have a global impact and serve as a testament to his dedication, his perseverance and to a career focused on a commitment to excellence," said Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, ARS Administrator, in 2018. Dr. Harris' interest in entomology started as a child when he helped his mother in the garden by removing damaging insects from the vegetable plants.
