The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Tuesday, February 9, 2021.

Hong Kong: Second Culling of Pigs in a Week due to ASF

Following the Hong Kong government's confirmation on February 4, 2021 that pigs on a farm were infected with African Swine Fever (ASF) and the ensuing culling of 240 cohort pigs in the same shed, two pigs in another shed of the same farm tested positive with ASF two days later. This led to the further culling of 590 pigs.

Peru: Avocado Exports Continue to Increase

Peruvian avocado exports are estimated to reach 450,000 MT in 2021, increasing 10 percent by volume compared to the previous year. Avocado exports in 2020 increased 30 percent by volume compared to 2019, reaching a record of 410,463 MT. Industry sources have indicated that recent changes in the Agricultural Promotion Law may impact the investment climate for Peru's agricultural export sector.

Turkey: Grain and Feed Update

Turkey's MY 2020/21 corn production is estimated at 7.1 MMT, an increase of 1.1 MMT compared to last marketing year. Turkey's wheat product exports continue to hold steady. Turkey struggles with food inflation because of corona virus measures and high international commodity prices. Turkey approved two genetically engineered (GE) soybean events and one GE corn event for feed. Agricultural subsidies for 2020 were announced in the Official Gazette. The total subsidies for 2021 will be 22 billion TL ($2.6 billion), which remained the same as the previous year.

Vietnam: Vietnamese Fruit Production and Exports Confront the Challenges of Salinity Intrusion and COVID-19

Fruits and vegetables are important export agricultural commodities in Vietnam. This is especially true for the Mekong Delta, which contributes 60 to 65 percent of Vietnam's total fruit export revenue. However, production in the Mekong Delta has become increasingly susceptible to drought and salinity intrusion. According to Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, drought and salinity intrusion affected 25 thousand hectares of fruit crops in the Mekong Delta in 2020. In 2020, despite Vietnam's progress in shifting from traditional export markets to new overseas opportunities and diversifying products, fruit export revenues dropped due to COVID-19 impacts.
