El Salvador: Consumer-Oriented Market Study 2020 Insights

During 2020, FAS El Salvador contracted a market research study to update Salvadoran consumer preferences in the Consumer-Oriented food/beverages category. This report summarizes key findings of the study combined with FAS insight that provides guidance of market opportunities. In 2019, the United States exported about $211 million of Consumer-oriented products to El Salvador, ranking third in the supplier list and as shown by this study, it still has good potential to increase market share in different categories. Among the trends found is that with the COVID-19 pandemic, people are certainly more concerned about their health, and therefore foods/beverages that help boost the immune system are winning market share.

European Union: European Citizens Prioritize Taste and Food Safety Over Sustainability When Purchasing Food

In December 2020, the European Commission released the latest Eurobarometer on EU citizens expectations related to food. This EU-wide survey found that taste, food safety and cost are the main factors influencing Europeans' food purchases. This survey also gives indication about what European consumers consider a sustainable food or diet.

Hong Kong: Microbial Food Ingredients Encounter No Regulatory Barriers in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's first vegan lab-grown ice cream launched recently amid the growing awareness of plant-based meats by Hong Kong consumers inspired by global trends and the availability of Impossible Foods, Beyond Meat, and Omnipork in the local market.

Israel: FAIRS Export Certificate Report

The report lists and describes certificates that should accompany food and agricultural products to Israel. It also includes the purpose of each certificate and the governmental agency responsible. In general, an original invoice, bill of lading, packing list, weighing list, health certificate, batch number certificate, invoice declaration, and insurance certificate are required to accompany any shipment. An export certificate matrix is included in this report. This report supplements the Israel Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards (FAIRS) – Country Report 2020.

Jordan: FAIRS Country Report

This report outlines Jordan's regulatory requirements for food and agricultural product imports. Jordan occasionally bans imports of specific products due to sanitary-phytosanitary (SPS) concerns. Agriculture Law 13 (2015) stipulates that the import of raw, unprocessed food items is subject to the Ministry of Agriculture granting import license approval. Regulators also at times use technical barriers to trade to protect domestic interests.

Portugal: Portuguese Wine Exports Rise in 2020 Despite COVID-19 Challenges

Portugal is divided into 14 main wine producing regions. Portuguese wine production for Marketing Year 2020/21 is estimated to drop three percent to 6.3 million hectoliters due to unstable weather conditions. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, during MY 2019/20, Portugal remained a net exporter of wine with exports rising five percent and valued at $936 million. Additionally, renewed Portuguese consumer interest in prime quality wines continues to create opportunities for wine imports.

Sweden: Sweden Bans Mink Breeding Until 2022

In October 2020, the first cases of coronavirus were identified on Swedish mink farms. Sweden responded by standing up a surveillance program and imposing a series of control measures. The Swedish Veterinary Institute and the Swedish Public Health Agency also conducted a joint risk assessment, and subsequently determined, from an infection control point of view, it would be inappropriate to increase the size of the mink population in 2021. Accordingly, the Swedish Board of Agriculture imposed a ban on mink breeding until December 31, 2021. Farmers will be permitted to keep their breeding animals to resume operations in 2022.

Thailand: Grain and Feed Update

MY2020/21 off-season rice planting area was well above last year, but production is unlikely to recover due to limited water supplies. Thai rice exports declined to a record low in 2020 and will likely be well below normal levels in 2021. Wheat imports declined 7 percent in the first half of MY2020/21. Milling wheat fell 11 percent due to the prolonged outbreak of COVID-19.
