The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Thursday, February 18, 2021.

 

Canada: Canada Clarifies Timelines for Anticipated Labeling Changes 

Canadian nutrition labeling changes published in 2016 will officially enter into force on December 14, 2021. However, regulators will focus on education and promoting compliance through December 2022, and then exercise limited enforcement discretion through December 2023. Canada has proposed aligning with U.S. labeling compliance intervals, starting in 2026, to establish a more predictable cycle for future changes; comments on the proposal will be accepted until April 3, 2021. Additional food labeling changes are expected to be announced by the end of 2021.​

 

European Union: Continuing Good Prospects for US Organic Exports to the EU


The upward trend on the organic food market in the European Union (EU) continues. EU Organic sales are steadily rising. The COVID-19 pandemic seems to be an additional driver in further boosting organic sales in 2020. There are continuing good prospects for U.S. organic product exports to the EU. USDA endorsed EU trade shows like BioFach, the world's largest organic trade fair, provide an excellent gateway for U.S. companies to establish contact with business partners. This report provides an overview of the EU market, policy, and trade related to U.S. organic exports. 


New Zealand: Market Opportunities Expand for Imported Meat in New Zealand

New Zealand is both a huge producer and exporter of meat products, exporting 70 percent of production. Despite this, New Zealand is also a market for a significant amount of meat imports to supply consumer demand for a wide variety of products. The United States is a key supplier of pork, sausages, and edible offal to New Zealand. The "low and slow" U.S. barbecue cooking trend has grown in popularity in New Zealand and this has opened opportunities for specialty cuts of U.S. meat as well as sauces and spices to enter the market. In 2020, New Zealand imported US$ 239 million of meat products, of which the United States was the second largest supplier at US$ 36 million.
