Ensuring a Robust and Accurate Data Quality Analysis in the 2020 Census By Deborah Stempowski, Assistant Director, Decennial Census Programs Directorate Asking outside experts to review our work is standard operating procedure at the U.S. Census Bureau. It underscores our commitment to quality and transparency. In a blog earlier this month, Acting Census Bureau Director Ron Jarmin touched on the steps we are taking to assess the quality of the 2020 Census. These steps include the establishment last April of the Data Quality Executive Guidance Group (chaired by Dr. Jarmin) to ensure resources are adequately and appropriately focused on addressing and documenting data quality issues. Dr. Jarmin also mentioned that we are working with outside experts who are examining our quality metrics and reviewing our processes, procedures and decisions related to the 2020 Census. In this blog, I take a closer look at the groups of experts we've engaged and at the work they are doing with us. Independent Scientific Advisory Group Releases Report on Assessment of 2020 Census Data Quality Processes The U.S. Census Bureau has released a report authored by JASON titled, "Assessment of 2020 Census Data Quality Processes." In this report, JASON (an independent scientific advisory group): - Provides additional recommendations and insights on how to ensure and provide quality data metrics.
- Identifies strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for data quality assessments and metrics.
- Gives recommendations on how to communicate important aspects of data quality metrics that accompany the release of 2020 Census data products.
