Eat Spanish style French toast this weekend πŸ˜‹

Ever walked into a Spanish pastry shop?

The smell of freshly baked treats is intoxicating, and the display windows are stuffed with all sorts of delicious pastries to choose from.  Most likely there's a coffee bar that people have crowded around, sipping a cafΓ© con leche while eating a pastry (or two) with a fork and knife.

And around this time of year, one of Spain's seasonal pastries begins to appear: it's torrijas time!

What are torrijas?

A cross between French toast and bread pudding, this Spanish Easter sweet is the perfect dessert. There are countless versions, but each starts with slightly stale bread.

The bread is then soaked in a liquid (milk infused with citrus and spices, syrup, or even wine), covered in beaten egg, and fried in olive oil.

Then it gets covered in cinnamon and sugar, honey, or even chocolate! There is truly a torrija for every taste.

Sound delicious?

Travel to Spain this weekend and join Madrid-based Chef Arantxa Lamas for a torrijas making class. You'll make FOUR different torrijas recipes together, and learn about the history of these delicious Easter treats.
