Feb 18, 2021 No. 20 With snow days behind and ahead of us, I'm writing to you feeling the burn of cabin fever. It's tough to get outside, but tougher still to stay in. So this week we're focusing on one of the best places in the house: the kitchen, and smart ways to make it more accessible and fun for our little wannabe-bakers.
When it comes to cooking with kids, there's the vision (little hands rolling perfect little balls of cookie dough!) and the reality (flour on the counter, on the floor, in their hair — everywhere). "There are so many reasons to get kids into the kitchen, but I do think they can develop a real pride in their self-sufficiency," says cookbook author Jenna Helwig.
But from early days of getting dinner on the table between feedings to safer cooking with young helpers, there are a few tools that can help prep go more smoothly. We reached out to chefs and cookbook authors who are parents to pull together this list of 20 things families can't live without in the kitchen. reader ✉️ We asked what meals your kids will always eat. Lacey's 5-year-old's favorite dinners are "bean burritos (refried beans warmed in the oven with melted cheese) and meatballs with mashed potatoes." Lauren also called out magic beans: "Tortillas with mashed avocado, and simply prepared black beans/garlic." Yum! eat

cubby finds: cloud dreams ask maxwell We've got a very small extra room that we're turning into a nursery. What's a good small space solution? - Joe Dear Joe,
Good for you, and I know you'll do well! You're also in luck, because one of the greatest things about babies is how few things they need to be happy as opposed to how much friends and family may give you that you often feel like you have to find room for. You really don't need much room at all.
On the other hand, you'll want a few good things to make sure that your child's nursery is comfortable and efficient for you both to be running the business of changing diapers, putting to bed and whiling away countless amounts of time at all hours of the night and day. Maxwell Ryan is a father and was an elementary school teacher in NYC before founding Apartment Therapy. He'd love to answer your question: askmaxwell@cubbyathome.com
