Hi reader,
Before I lost 40 pounds, I thought I was doing everything right.
I avoided fast food, didn't drink soda, and always bought whole-grain bread. But despite those choices, I wasn't seeing resultsβand I was constantly frustrated, tired, and confused about what "eating healthy" really meant.
Looking back, I realize the problem wasn't a lack of effort⦠it was a lack of clarity.
I was making "better" choices, but not the ones my body actually needed.
Since then, I've learned a lotβand today, I want to share 6 powerful lessons that completely changed how I think about food, weight loss, and feeling good in my own skin:
#1: Calories do count
It's not about obsessingβit's about awareness. Big changes start to happen just by making a small effort to be intentional. When I started tracking (I use MyFitnessPal), I dropped 8lbs in the first week alone. And all I did was pay attention - I didn't even make any changes yet. Even now, it's the tool I return to whenever I feel off track.
#2: Fresh, real food fuels you better
Highly processed foods might be quick, but they leave you tired and hungry soon after. Now I focus on simple, whole ingredients that keep me energized all day. I also focus on protein first, and then healthy fats, and round out with whole grains. I focus on nutrient-dense calories, and that's what makes the biggest difference. Why? Because I don't feel hungry. I feel satisfied and that keeps me on track.
#3: "Diet" foods are often the opposite of healthy
Low-fat, low-calorie, sugar-free labels can be misleading. Many of these are filled with artificial junk that does more harm than good. Not to mention. These foods don't keep you full, and that's why you're hungry an hour after eating. Don't fall for the marketingβread those labels! You're much better off using the whole fat and real butter rather than the fake stuff.
#4: Healthy eating doesn't have to cost more
I used to think nutritious food meant expensive groceries. But planning ahead, cooking at home, and watching portions actually lowered my grocery bill. Don't overcomplicate things. Focus on real food, plan, and prep ahead.
#5: Cooking from scratch can fit into a busy life
Even with kids, a full-time job, and now a business to runβI make it work with meal prep and freezer cooking. I did when I worked full-time outside the home, and I do now, working at home. It's all about the strategy (not spending hours in the kitchen).
#6: You don't have to give up your favorite foods
This was a game-changer for me. I still enjoy pizza and chipsβit's all about moderation, not perfection. Deprivation isn't sustainable. Flexibility is.
The truth isβhealthy eating is not a diet.
It's a lifestyle built on daily habits, small wins, and learning to trust yourself again.
