The Trump administration began mass layoffs at select federal agencies, including 2,400 positions at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the layoffs are part of a restructuring aimed at enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. "We're going to do more with less," he said.

Protesters outside the CDC campus in Atlanta cited concerns for public safety and the local economy.

U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams of Atlanta resigned as the chair of the state Democratic Party following criticism over Kamala Harris' loss to President Trump.

The party's state committee also recently voted to make the chair a full-time paid position, leading some to question whether an elected official could serve.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, facing re-election in 2026, reportedly urged his fellow Democrat to resign, which drew pushback from some who say Williams was being made a scapegoat.

A federal judge sided with Georgia in its dispute with Alabama over water allocation from Lake Allatoona, confirming Georgia's rights to additional water from the reservoir.

The ruling marked another win for Georgia in its long-running water wars with Alabama and Florida. In 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Georgia over Florida in a key water case.

The Lake Allatoona dispute stemmed from a 2018 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ruling that let Georgia draw more water to meet the needs of Cobb County and other communities.
