School Bus Carrying 40 Overturns

Several people were injured when a school bus overturned after colliding with an SUV on Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 10 near Marana. Watch the report.

Police arrested the SUV driver, Nicholas Rodriguez, 30, of Marana, on suspicion of three felony counts of aggravated assault. Rodriguez tested positive for THC in his system, police say.

The Kingman School District bus was carrying 40 people, including students and chaperones attending a Future Business Leaders of America conference at the Tucson Convention Center.

All of the passengers received precautionary checkups at area hospitals before their release. Officials said three students and one adult suffered various undisclosed injuries.

Bill Would Raise Age to Buy Tobacco

State lawmakers are divided over a bill that would increase the age for tobacco purchases from 18 to 21.

Supporters say it would align Arizona with federal law, decrease underage smoking, and ensure the state receives $5 million in federal funding for tobacco cessation programs.

An opponent, Rep. Alexander Kolodin, R-Scottsdale, called the threat of lost funding "federal funds blackmail."

Another critic, state Rep. Nick Kupper, R-Surprise, said, "This bill, currently as written, would not allow members of the military who can die for their country to smoke."

Locals More Prone to Mountain Rescues

Phoenix fire officials released data showing Arizona residents are more likely to be rescued from the state's mountains than out-of-town visitors. Watch.

The report examined the number of Phoenix Valley rescues for South Mountain, Camelback, and Piestewa Peak since 2021.

Results showed out-of-state residents made up 29% of mountain rescues. The states where the visitors most often came from were Illinois, Texas, and California.

Several rescues have already taken place this year, including one where a man was airlifted after a medical emergency on Camelback Mountain.
