A historic winter storm brought record snowfall to the Sunshine State, with a state record of 8.8 inches reported in Milton in the Panhandle.

Snow forced the closure of airports, major highways, and schools in North Florida and the Panhandle.

In Pensacola, a 130-year-old local snowfall record was shattered, with 5 inches measured at the airport. The prior record of 3 inches was set in 1895.

Snow also blanketed the Emerald Coast, Tallahassee, and the Big Bend region and reached east to Jacksonville, where freezing rain and sleet also were reported.

After two fatal accidents last week, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office announced a campaign Tuesday aimed at curbing the high rate of pedestrian and bicyclist collisions.

Deputies will increase their presence at dangerous intersections as part of the campaign.

Palm Beach County ranks No. 4 in the state for crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists, with 1,542 collisions through the first 10 months of last year, resulting in 144 serious injuries and 51 deaths. See the county's Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Study.

Elsewhere, two pedestrian deaths in two days in Martin County led local law enforcement leaders to remind the public to use common sense when it comes to pedestrian safety and crossing busy highways.
