Fun in the Snow, a Masked Visitor, and Charades

This week's winter storm has been challenging for airline customers and employees, road crews, first responders, and school officials—but it also provided some rare sights and enjoyable experiences for many who aren't accustomed to seeing snow.

Article Icon 1Pentagon Sending 1,500 Troops to Border

The Pentagon is implementing President Trump's directive to use the military to secure the southern border by deploying up to 1,500 active duty troops. They will join the estimated 2,500 National Guard and Reserve forces already stationed there and are expected to support Border Patrol Agents with logistics, transportation, and barrier construction.

In response to another executive order, border agents have been directed to deport migrants who enter the country illegally without allowing them to request asylum. The policy is similar to that implemented under Title 42, which barred entry for those traveling through countries with high rates of COVID-19 infection.

Amid reports of pending immigration enforcement operations in San Antonio and elsewhere, the Justice Department has directed federal prosecutors to investigate local officials who attempt to impede deportations of illegal aliens.

"It is the responsibility of the Justice Department to defend the Constitution, and accordingly, to lawfully execute the policies that the American people elected President Trump to implement," said the three-page memo.

President Trump invited three tech executives to the White House on Tuesday to announce an initiative dubbed Stargate, a $500 billion joint venture in artificial intelligence infrastructure that includes 10 data centers under development in Texas.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Oracle's Larry Ellison were on hand for the announcement.

"AI holds incredible promise for all of us, for every American," Ellison said. Altman agreed, saying, "I think this will be the most important project of this era."

Trump asserted the initiative has the potential to create over 100,000 jobs "almost immediately," calling it the "largest AI infrastructure project, by far, in history."

This week's winter storm has been challenging for airline customers and employees, road crews, first responders, and school officials—but it also provided some rare sights and enjoyable experiences for many who aren't accustomed to seeing snow.

Houston residents visited local parks and slid down hills on skis, tubes, sleds, and cardboard boxes. A man in Galveston was filmed skiing on the beach!

Even the animals got in on the fun. Camels, zebras, and kangaroos at Indian Springs Ranch in Manchaca were photographed checking out the white stuff, and the leopards, flamingos, and sea lions at the Houston Zoo got to play in it as well.

Of course, no snow day would be complete without snowmen, and folks across Central and Southeast Texas didn't disappoint!
