President Donald Trump's first official visit of his second term will be to western North Carolina on Friday, where he will view recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Helene.

Gov. Josh Stein confirmed Trump's visit and called it "very good news for the people of western North Carolina," adding that he hopes to speak with the president.

During Trump's inauguration speech Monday, he mentioned North Carolina as a state "still suffering from a hurricane that took place many months ago." In the weeks following Helene, he described the federal government's response to the storm as a failure of Democratic leadership.

Trump last visited western North Carolina in October, when he delivered remarks in Swannanoa. The time and location of tomorrow's visit have not yet been released.

A December breach of PowerSchool, North Carolina's public school information system, exposed the social security numbers of approximately 312,000 teachers and 910 students, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

The California-based company is offering those affected by the hack two years of free identity protection and credit monitoring services via Experian.

PowerSchool became aware of the breach on Dec. 28 but didn't notify impacted school systems until a week later. NCDPI reported last week that data belonging to current and past students and teachers in the system was affected by the breach "to some degree."

NCDPI had decided in November 2023—well before the hack occurred—to switch to Infinite Campus as of July 1, 2025.

Tuesday night's winter storm created a rare winter wonderland across eastern and coastal areas of North Carolina.

Residents woke up to anywhere from 2 to 7 inches of snow, with many schools and government agencies closed.

Hatteras and Ocracoke Islanders received 5 or more inches of snow, marking the Outer Banks' first substantial accumulation since the January 2018 "Snowicane."

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore closed off-road vehicle ramps during the storm after numerous vehicles got stuck on beaches due to the combination of snow and sand.

Central North Carolina got up to an inch of snow—enough to create slick roads and a few car accidents. View snowy photos from the Outer Banks, southeastern North Carolina, central North Carolina, and the Charlotte area.
