No to Federal Poll Monitors, a Big Football Weekend, and a Pygmy Hippo

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson informed the Department of Justice that federal poll monitors would not be allowed inside Texas voting sites on Election Day, citing a state law restricting their access to polling places or central counting stations.

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson informed the Department of Justice that federal poll monitors would not be allowed inside Texas voting sites on Election Day, citing a state law restricting their access to polling places or central counting stations.

The DOJ had announced plans to deploy monitors across 86 jurisdictions in 27 states, including eight counties in Texas, to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws.

"Rest assured that Texas has robust processes and procedures in place to ensure that eligible voters may participate in a free and fair election," Nelson said in her letter.

Gov. Greg Abbott concurred with Nelson in a social media post.

A federal judge ruled that out-of-state power companies can now operate in Texas, striking down a state law that limits new transmission line construction to companies already owning lines in Texas.

The decision benefits companies like Florida’s NextEra Energy and New York’s LS Power, which challenged the law after its passage in 2019 and previous efforts to enter the Texas market.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Pitman ruled that the law violates the U.S. Constitution because it restricts interstate commerce.

Dallas and Harris counties will allow eligible inmates to vote in person on Election Day, continuing a practice that Harris County implemented in 2021 and Dallas County started just last year.

Under Texas law, people with felony convictions who have not completed their sentences are restricted from participating in elections. However, most inmates in county jails are serving sentences for misdemeanors.

According to criminal justice advocates, jail-based voting not only increases participation in elections but also lowers recidivism rates.

Officials are unsure how many inmates will choose to cast a ballot but say they are committed to providing the opportunity to do so.
