SaborUSA Colombia, FAS Bogota's flagship marketing campaign, partnered with the U.S. Pet Food Institute (PFI) to promote American pet food through a "Petween" social media contest. The activity targeted over 43,000 pet owners in Bogota, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla to educate them on the benefits and availability of U.S. pet food in the local market. In 2023, Colombia became the sixth largest global export market for U.S. dog and cat food, with total U.S. exports reaching $47 million.
FAS Mumbai forecasts MY 2024/25 Indian raw cotton exports at 1.2 million 480 lb. bales, 55 percent lower than previous estimate, due to India lint prices trading four percent higher than global prices, prompting buyers to prefer finer quality machine-picked cotton from foreign origins. While India prices remain above international prices, mills are likely to import higher volumes of cotton to cover export commitments for high value textile products. Consequently, FAS Mumbai forecasts MY 2024/25 imports at 2 million 480 lb. bales, 67 percent higher than previous estimate.
In terms of total volume, Mexico´s marketing year (MY) 2024/25 total deciduous fruit production is forecast nearly unchanged, with a small decline in pear production mostly offset by minor growth in apple and table grape production. Apple consumption is forecast to grow only slightly. Pear consumption is estimated to grow by 3 percent. Grape consumption is forecasted lower as inflation affects purchasing power of Mexican households. With stable year-to-year domestic production, imported product largely from the United States will address the minor consumption growth for apples and pears. Even though U.S. apples entered the retail market at a competitive price to start the 2024 season, domestic supply is also abundant. Mexico's grape exports are forecast at a record for the second consecutive year.
The New Zealand Government is in the final stages of amending its Climate Change Response Act 2002 to remove agriculture activities from the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme. This is the first legislative process nearing Royal Assent by the new coalition government, which has disbanded controversial agricultural emissions pricing plans put in place by the previous government in the last 12 months. These amendments to current legislation would give New Zealand's largest sector time to develop an alternative solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Türkiye is the second largest cattle importing country after the United States, with imports valued at $1.6 billion in 2023 despite strict health and technical requirements. As of May 15, 2024, the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MinAF) enacted an unjustified trade embargo on U.S. cattle following the detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in some dairy herds in the United States. In addition, several European Union countries have seen sales of their dairy cows restricted over the past several months due to the spread of Bluetongue disease, including Germany, Austria, and Hungary. This month, MinAF has released additional restrictions for live cattle imports.
