Lawmakers Prioritize House Bill 10 Passage

When General Assembly Republicans return to Raleigh Tuesday, they plan to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of House Bill 10.

The bill contains two GOP priorities: a state law requiring local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE officials, and nearly $463 million in funding for private school vouchers.

The move comes before state Republicans lose their supermajority status and as President-elect Donald Trump launches what he says will be the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. Trump nominated South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) as Secretary of Homeland Security Tuesday to lead the effort.

The outgoing governor focused his veto on the voucher funding aspect, saying: “This bill takes public taxpayer dollars from the public schools and gives it to private school vouchers that will be used by wealthy families.”

Hurricane Helene Aid: Where It's Going

North Carolina lawmakers are also working on a third Hurricane Helene disaster package after approving $877 million via House Bill 149 on Oct. 10, and Senate Bill 743 on Oct. 24.

House Bill 149 appropriated $273 million toward Division of Emergency Management oversight ($250 million), school cafeteria employee salaries ($16 million), grants for the North Carolina League of Municipalities ($2 million), and State Board of Elections work ($5 million).

Senate Bill 743 appropriated $604 million to public school repairs ($50 million), small business recovery loans ($50 million), mental health crisis support ($25 million), child care centers ($10 million), utility assistance ($9 million), tourism promotion of western North Carolina ($5 million), and rental assistance ($1 million).

Gov. Roy Cooper has criticized the funding appropriations as insufficient for properly addressing the damage, which currently stands at $3.9 billion.

Families Frustrated With School Reassignments

The opening of four new schools in western Wake County has prompted school reassignments that families—particularly in hard-hit Apex—aren't happy about.

Parents are speaking out against reassigning children who have already been assigned before, or who don't want to attend a new school. They're also concerned about elementary and middle school siblings who may end up on different schedules. Wake County families can check their proposed reassignment here.

Two dozen parents protested the reassignments Tuesday in front of Wake County Public School System's headquarters prior to a public hearing on the new plan.

Meanwhile, in Granville County, at least 100 Granville Central High School students walked out of class Tuesday to protest the district's plans to close the high school, Butner Stem Middle, and GC Hawley Middle. The proposed reassignments would move those middle school students to a new school where Granville Central High is currently located.
