Marco Rubio has been announced as President-elect Donald Trump's secretary of state nomination, leaving his Senate seat open. A push is circulating for Gov. Ron DeSantis to appoint Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as the Sunshine State's next Senator. Alabama Senator Katie Britt, endorsed by Trump while running for her first term in 2022, publicly called for Lara Trump to fill Rubio's seat in an interview published Tuesday. Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna echoed support for Lara Trump in a series of posts on X, writing Tuesday that Lara Trump "will keep the seat and avoid a messy primary" in 2026. DeSantis could appoint Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez or resign as governor and appoint himself directly to the Senate seat. Other potential contenders include Attorney General Ashley Moody and former Florida House Speaker Jose Oliva. | Gaetz Tapped for U.S. Attorney General President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday he will nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz to be the next U.S. attorney general. Gaetz has served since 2017 as the representative from Florida's 1st congressional district, which includes Escambia, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties. Gaetz remains the subject of an ongoing House Ethics Committee probe regarding sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Some Republican senators have objected to the nomination and predict he'll face a tough confirmation battle. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said, "I don’t think it’s a serious nomination for attorney general. We need to have a serious attorney general. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to consider somebody that is serious.” | Mount Trashmore on Hold in Broward Broward County commissioners decided to defer the decision on the Monarch Hill Landfill expansion to January after hearing from residents on Tuesday. You can watch a video here. City leaders also made their case to stop the expansion, which critics have dubbed “Mount Trashmore.” Officials are considering Waste Management's request to expand the landfill vertically and horizontally. According to the landfill operator, the site has only six years of capacity remaining if it is not expanded. Residents who live near the landfill packed the commission meeting. Most were angry and pushed back against the proposal. Opened in 1965, the landfill spans parts of Coconut Creek, Deerfield Beach, and Pompano Beach. | | | ➤ Statewide: Florida posted a record third-quarter tourism total this year, with 34.61 million people traveling to the state, up from 34 million during the same period in 2023 and 34.55 million in 2022.
