Trump Taps Rubio, Gabbard, and Gaetz

President-elect Donald Trump announced three key nominations on Wednesday, naming Sen. Marco Rubio secretary of state, Tulsi Gabbard director of national intelligence, and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz attorney general.

Both Rubio and Gabbard were presidential candidates and Trump opponents. Rubio was reported to be on Trump’s vice president shortlist, while Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, became an independent in 2022 before joining the GOP last month.

Trump’s decision to tap Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general received mixed reviews, given the Florida congressman's polarizing role within the GOP in ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Gaetz resigned his seat in Congress late Wednesday following the announcement, but some GOP Senators predicted he wouldn't win confirmation.

GOP Picks Thune for Senate Majority Leader

Republicans elected Sen. John Thune of South Dakota as Senate majority leader on Wednesday, defeating Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Rick Scott to succeed former leader Mitch McConnell.

Thune, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, has chaired the Senate Republican Policy Committee and served as conference chair. As the Senate GOP whip, he managed operations of the Senate floor after McConnell suffered a concussion in 2023.

After Wednesday’s vote, Thune pledged to deliver on President-elect Trump's agenda, stating that "the Republican team is united."

Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso won an uncontested election Wednesday to replace Thune as GOP whip after serving six years as Senate GOP conference chair.

Women Getting a New League of Their Own

The Women's Professional Baseball League announced plans to launch a six-team league for female players in 2026, marking the first pro league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League dissolved in 1954.

Co-founded by Justine Siegal, the first woman to coach for an MLB team, the WPBL aims to capitalize on the growing interest in women’s sports and is expected to generate $1 billion in global revenue this year.

Siegal acknowledged the recent success of the WNBA and the inaugural season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, stating, "We’re standing on the shoulders of the success of the other pro leagues" to help the WPBL.

More than 400 athletes from the U.S., Japan, Canada, and Great Britain have registered to try out so far, reminiscent of the 1992 blockbuster A League of Their Own.
