Eating in autumn is a joy! The markets are filled with hard squashes and pumpkins, root veggies, quince, pears, and apples. These food nourish both of the organs that are governed by the season; the lungs and large intestine, according to Chinese medicine. Be sure to keep the large intestine clear and moving at this time of year. Increase elimination by drinking water, eating plenty of fibre-rich plant foods, greens, beans, lentils, and whole grains. Focus on: - High fibre foods: pears, apples, peas and other legumes, leafy greens, cruciferous, ground flaxseed, and chia. These foods increase the amount of bowel movements, support the physical transport through the colon, reduce constipation and decrease bowel toxicity (which can affect the muscular and nervous system, creating tension and exhaustion). It's a great time to enjoy kichadi (recipe here). - Warming foods: long-cooking root vegetables, pumpkins and winter squashes, woody herbs, soups, stews, legumes.
- Sour foods: sourdough, sauerkraut, pickles, olives, leeks, adzuki beans, acv, citrus, and green apples. These stimulate the process of contraction, withdrawing and going inward. - Moistening foods: tempeh, spinach, barley, millet, pear, seaweeds, flaxseed oil, olive oil. The lungs and colon are weakened by excess dryness, caused by indoor heating. - Pungent foods: cayenne, chilli, garlic, turnip, horseradish, cabbage, daikon radish. These help clear mucus and phlegm in the lungs and large intestine. | | Falling for Apples There are over 7,500 different varieties of apples grown worldwide, each with unique flavours, textures, and uses. My personal favourites for eating are Gala, Macintosh, and Honeycrisp. For baking or cooking I like granny Smith, Fuji, and Winesap. Eat the peels! They are packed with antioxidants - up to six times more than the flesh, including compounds that may support brain health and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. Bite for Oral Health: While they aren't a substitute for brushing your teeth, apples can help cleanse your mouth. Their crunchy texture stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize acids and clean teeth. "Apple-Polyphenols" for Skin Health: Apple polyphenols (found mostly in the skin) are being researched for their potential to protect the skin from UV damage, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. | | | | |
