Comparing cheese prices should not be this complicated.

Hi reader,

The best way to get the most food for your money is to compare the unit prices. Some stores will list the unit prices on the shelf tags, but oftentimes, you have to do the steps to figure it out yourself.

  • Choose the same kind of thing.
  • Gather two bits of information (price and quantity).
  • Do the math and determine the unit price.

Most pantry and dairy items will follow these same easy 3-steps. But there are rule breakers. One that stands out to me in the dairy section though, is cheese.

First… you can have the same kind of cheese, but the cheese can come in different forms.

There are EIGHT different forms of cheddar cheese in the grocery store: a block of cheddar, shredded cheddar, finely shredded cheddar, thick-cut shredded cheddar, sliced cheddar, cubed cheddar, cracker-cut cheddar, and cheddar cheese sticks.

Second… each form of cheese can come in different sizes.

You can get them in 6 ounces or 8 ounces or 10 ounces or 12 ounces or 16 ounces… even 32 ounces!

Third… cheese can be found in three places at the grocery store!

The dairy aisle, the deli counter, and many stores have a "specialty cheese" kiosk that's like a stand-alone section in the middle of the store.

They really don't make this easy on us, do they?

The key with cheese is to determine what form of cheese we want to price compare first and then follow the three steps above. Repeat for the other forms and decide what works best for your needs.

It may not seem worth your time to save a few pennies on a block of cheese, there is quite a bit of work involved just to find unit prices on cheese!!

Is that work truly worth YOUR time?

After years of trying to figure out what sales and coupons and hacks would save me the most money at the store, I finally devised systems that works. That's what I teach in Grocery Budget Mastermind.
