Day 4 πŸ‘‰ πŸ«πŸ’ Cherry Chocolate Smoothie with Almond Butter

I'm excited to share this healthy chocolate cherry smoothie - it is delicious!

Frozen cherries, banana, cacao powder, almond butter, and chia seeds are blended with coconut (or almond milk) to create a smooth, creamy, decadent chocolate smoothie bursting with cherry flavor! It's different from the other fruit smoothies I share but still filled with nutrition - even though it tastes like dessert.

A common complaint with fruit smoothies is that you're hungry within an hour because they don't fill you up. This chocolate cherry smoothie is packed with good fats, protein, and carbs to give you energy first thing in the morning and keep you full through lunch.

This chocolate cherry smoothie uses superfood cacao powder to give the smoothie its rich chocolate flavor. Cacao is higher in fiber and protein and often has less sugar than cocoa powder. It has a slightly more bitter taste but still creates a deliciously rich chocolate flavor that pairs beautifully with cherries, banana, and almond butter. If you don't have cacao powder and don't want to purchase it, you can leave it out. The smoothie will still be delicious; it just won't have a chocolate flavor.

Last, almond butter is delicious, but if you don; 't have it, then peanut butter or another nut butter will work.

Shopping tips

Let's start with the cherries. I recommend purchasing frozen cherries to give this smoothie a cold, creamy texture. You can buy frozen cherries at most major grocery stores. I purchased a 3lb bag of organic frozen dark sweet cherries at BJ's Wholesale, so if you have access to a wholesale store, I recommend shopping there for the best prices.

If you purchase fresh, remove the pits and freeze them ahead of time for the best results. Also, make sure to check for pits even when purchasing frozen pitted cherries because sometimes pits do sneak in.

Cacao powder is a superfood found in the natural food section and sometimes in the baking section of the grocery store. You can also purchase it at a great price online from Thrive Market. I like to buy the Thrive Market brand, but the Navitas brand is good too. You can also purchase chia seeds, collagen powder, protein powder, and nut butter online from Thrive Market, so it's a one-stop shop for many smoothie ingredients. If you're a Thrive Market customer then check out my smoothie ingredient shopping list.

Smoothie tips

✅ Smoothies provide a ton of nutrition.

One green smoothie made with fruits, vegetables, and other superfoods is packed with nutrition. Sometimes more nutrition than you would get all day eating 1500 – 2000 calories.

And because a smoothie is blended, adding superfoods or additional ingredients to include extra nutrition into your day is easy.

For example, throw in chia or flax seeds to consume more omega-3 fatty acids. Want to experience the benefits of coconut oil? No problem, add a tablespoon to your smoothie. Need more protein? Add in collagen, protein powder, or nut butter. The possibilities are endless when making smoothies.

Also, one smoothie is only about 250 – 375 calories per serving, depending on what you add. This means you're getting a lot of nutrition for minimal calories.

You will naturally feel more satisfied and healthy when your body is nourished. If you struggle with balancing and increasing your nutrition, I think you'll find drinking smoothies very beneficial.
