We have updated our IP guidance for doing business in the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) Registering your intellectual property (IP) in the UK does not provide protection abroad. The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has published new guidance for people wishing to do business in Europe. It provides practical information and resources to help you make the most of your IP when doing business in the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA). You can view the new guidance via this link: Did you know? The way we trade with the EU and EEA member states has changed. In 2020 we signed the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU and in 2021 we signed the EEA EFTA-UK Agreement. These agreements govern our trading with EU and EEA member states. What you need to know before you go If you are thinking of expanding your business to the EU/EEA, it is essential to know how to manage and enforce your IP as private property rights. IP rights are territorial, and you may need to register your rights through: - a regional or international process which allows you to file in several countries at once or;
- an application to national offices responsible for granting IP rights.
