The Grill That Will Make Me a Tailgater |
I'm not a huge tailgater. I went to a lot of Big 10 sports games growing up, but the general strategy was to find street parking no more than one mile from the stadium, arrive as close to game time as possible and leave shortly after the final whistle. What can I say? Weekends can be a busy time. And so I never really had an appreciation for why anyone would really want a grill they could toss in the back of their car. At least I didn't until I tested a run of portable grills this spring. The winner of that test by a mile (which is a totally reasonable distance to park from a football stadium thank you very much), was the Nomad. Its designers seem to have read every bad online review of every portable grill ever made and made one that addresses all of them. The thing is a tank, a metal suitcase that looks like the nerd character from a Mission Impossible movie might keep his computer inside. But the cast aluminum box actually maintains heat from wood and charcoal at a level I'd expect from a pretty good, full-size smoker. The grate, also heavy-duty, is domed and honeycombed, which not only makes beautiful markings, but easy flipping. And moving it around is as pleasant as moving a 30-pound piece of metal can be. Just grab the closed case by the thick rubber handle and toss it on any picnic table, rock, or overturned trash can you want. I may just become a tailgater yet. —Noah Kaufman |
