Hey reader,
Part of my strategy for eating real food on a budget (which is the EXACT same strategy I teach in Grocery Budget Bootcamp) is to make foods from scratch… when it counts.
Have you heard that cooking dry beans is cheaper than buying canned beans?
I have, but I've always wondered if it's really true… so let's crunch the numbers and see!
Ground Rules: - I'm choosing Walmart because it's a national chain and the prices don't vary too much from region to region.
- I'm using generic-brand beans. Not organic and nothing fancy. Just plain beans.
- One serving of cooked beans – whether they are from a can or you make them from scratch – is ½ cup.
- All prices are as of this writing.
Black Beans - Dry
The best deal for dry black beans is $4.88 for a 4 lb bag, making one pound cost $1.22.
One pound of dry black beans yields 7 cups of cooked beans, which is 14 servings. Doing the math, one ½ cup serving of cooked-from-scratch black beans costs $0.10.
Black Beans - Canned
The best deal for canned black beans is 68¢ per 15.5 oz can. There are 3.5 servings in one can, making one ½ cup serving of canned black beans cost 19¢.
Bottom Line: Dry black beans are cheaper than canned black beans.
Wow! Who knew canned black beans would cost nearly TWICE AS MUCH as dried black beans?!
But what about garbanzo beans or pinto beans? I've crunched the numbers on those too!! Click HERE to read all my research and math and see if you're really saving money by buying dry beans!

ALL my best ♥,
