3 simple and practical ways to stick to your meal plan

Hi reader,

I'm a very type A person. Lists and planners make my heart sing, and I love checking those boxes!!

But even I get thrown off the meal plan sometimes! When that happens I like to keep these tips in mind:

1. Think about WHY you made a meal plan.

Anytime you're working on a new goal, it's easy to stray if you don't keep your WHY in mind.

Are you trying to:

  • save money?
  • reduce waste?
  • prevent stress?
  • eat healthier?
  • save time?

All of these are important and keeping YOUR why in mind can give you the push you need to keep going. (And keeping a few Dump Dinner Freezer Meals on hand isn't a bad idea either!)

2. Be flexible.

You can stick to your meal plan AND be flexible at the same time. The key is being prepared with flexibility in mind. Life is going to happen and your plan will have to change, but KNOWING this will happen at some point in time means being able to prepare for it.

Don't be afraid to:

  • swap your meals
  • have a back-up in the freezer or pantry
  • bump your meal to the next day and just eat PB&Js

The meal plan police aren't going to knock on your door if you have to change things up. The important part is to get back on track so the food you bought doesn't go to waste.

3. Plan food your family likes.

If your family doesn't like what you make, you'll keep running into the same hurdles over and over again… which leads to frustration and wanting to give up!

Talk to your family about:

  • what is their favorite type of dish? (i.e. meat and potatoes, casserole, ethnic)
  • remind them they may not get a favorite every night, but this particular night IS their favorite
  • go back to the WHY and make it a family goal

Don't hesitate to write down favorite dishes or note the "ooo's" and "ahh's" on a new dish. And YOUR favorites should go on the list too!

Meal planning is SO important to help you stay on budget and eat healthier. Sticking to it can be a challenge when life comes up.

But you know what? Life will ALWAYS throw you curveballs. So be prepared and make the meal plan work for YOU!
