The Truth About Foster Care At MDHHS we understand that everyone's foster care journey is different, and there may be hesitation in joining the foster care community. There are many misconceptions surrounding foster care, and we want to help those interested be informed on what fostering really stands for. Some common misbeliefs of fostering relate to the treatment of children in foster care or the operations and motivations within the foster system. We want to bust those myths and help spread the key goals of foster care - bettering a child's future, strengthening families, and improving communities. Foster care temporarily places children in homes with approved caregivers when they cannot safely remain with their families. Our main goal is for children to return to their homes and families when it is safe to do so. Until then, foster families provide these children with the consistency and support they need to grow. Communities are also positively impacted when children at risk are placed in safe environments. The children gain a sense of security and have opportunities to grow in a protective environment. We also attempt to place children within their community, and not remove them from familiar settings. If you are interested in foster care and want to learn more, consider joining us. No matter what your level of interest may be, we are continually looking for advocates, volunteers, and prospective foster parents. |
