There are lots of different traditions out there for family rituals. Maybe your family celebrates a certain way because of your religion, or because of where you're from. I know I have readers in the south who drink sweet tea on their porch every week, while in southern California we used to go and visit the same section of houses every year that would go all out with lights for the holidays (my favorite: the Ferris wheel full of stuffed animals that someone built in their front yard. I have no idea where they store it January-November!)
Part of surviving this wild time right now has been really leaning into our smaller family traditions, and one that we all love and look forward to is our Friday family movie nights. We make a pizza (okay, okay, mostly we order a pizza), and we choose a movie that hopefully everyone will love. Sometimes this means we try to show the kids a movie from our childhoods, like Honey I Shrunk the Kids, or Pee Wee's Big Adventure (both of these movies still hold up!). More often, we are watching things like Trolls World Tour, or Over the Moon (both cute, but maybe not ones I would watch again?)
Obviously, it's not really about having a Criterion film discussion with my 7 year old. It's about making a pillow fort of blankets and eating popcorn, and it's about getting a Crumbl delivery (not a sponsored post I promise, but these cookies are legit so good you need to know about them!) It's about slowing down at the end of the week and just spending time together in a no-stress way. It's about having a family tradition that is fun where even I get to take a break. And let's be real, without these nights, I wouldn't have the patience left at the end of the year to assemble the playhouse with 8 million pieces at midnight on Christmas Eve!
Now, here are some things I found on the internet this week…
Layered necklaces look so pretty and effortless, but when they come all in a set like this it's actually effortless because then I don't have to measure necklace lengths!
On a recent road trip we listened to a lot of this podcast and it kept my kids engaged (and maybe honed their debate skills!)
Anyone else have a little one a little anxious about going back to school? This book is always a favorite around here.
I know I could never wear these while cooking, but I love overalls and these are on sale!
While back to school shopping, I might have accidentally purchased this amazing lamp/microscope hybrid. Oops!
This is in my Etsy cart, just waiting for cooler weather (I miss the entire Rose family!)
I have no idea what to make of the Havana syndrome, but fell into a rabbit hole after reading this article.
Sign me up for a Dirty Dancing-esque resort stay, please.
