Trump Floats Guard Use in Memphis

President Donald Trump suggested Friday that Memphis could see a National Guard deployment similar to a “test” underway in Washington, D.C., aimed at tackling violent crime.

Speaking on a Memphis radio program, Trump said the D.C. strategy had already led to hundreds of arrests, adding that other cities like Chicago are interested.

Trump also stated that some Democratic-led cities have privately asked for federal help, though no formal plans were announced.

Abrego Freed, Faces Possible Deportation to Uganda

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported to a Salvadoran prison earlier this year, was released from a Tennessee jail Friday but now faces possible deportation to Uganda.

Immigration officials notified him less than a day after his release that he could be removed to the African nation within 72 hours.

Abrego, accused of human smuggling in a Tennessee case, is under electronic monitoring while awaiting trial in January.

His attorneys call the Uganda plan “preposterous” and say the Trump administration has dangled a plea deal tied to deportation to Costa Rica instead.

U of M Shuts Down DEI Office Under New Law

The University of Memphis has closed its Office of Multicultural Affairs to comply with Tennessee’s new “Dismantling DEI Departments Act."

The new law puts an end to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at public institutions, with lawmakers hoping to ensure all opportunities are now based on individual merit.

The closure came less than a day after President Bill Hardgrave informed students and staff of the change.

The university says it remains "committed" to providing "a successful outcome for every student."
