Date: July 29, 2025
Location: Tai Tong Restaurant, Penang, Malaysia
Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★
Dim sum never crossed my mind when I was in Malaysia, but my dad suggested going for it on our last full day in Penang. Well, why not? There's quite a large Cantonese community in Penang so it's worth giving it a try. And dare I say that I was very impressed with my Penang dim sum experience. The portions are smaller than what you'd normally get in China, but the quality was superb! Take the spare ribs on the bottom left for example - every single piece was a rib, no taro or pumpkin or whatever they usually hide underneath to make the portion look bigger. And once again it tasted like childhood, where dim sum used to be authentic. Most surprisingly, you don't order online like you'd usually do in China nowadays. It's cart-style!! I don't think I know of anywhere in China that does this anymore so Penang gets super plus points for having this episode of nostalgia 😉
