************* Webinar: international day of the midwife 2025 On the International Day of the Midwife, join a WHO-hosted webinar on this year's theme, "Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis," which highlights the indispensable role midwives play in humanitarian and emergency settings around the world. ************* World Hand Hygiene Day It might be gloves. It is always hand hygiene. Hand hygiene is a simple, cost-effective way to prevent infections and ensure safe medical care. While gloves are crucial for protection against blood and body fluids, they don't replace the need for proper hand cleaning. On World Hand Hygiene Day, WHO calls on governments, health facilities, and frontline workers to emphasize hand hygiene. This practice protects both patients and healthcare workers. Gloves can get contaminated and are often misused, leading to environmental harm. These lists aim to guide decision-making by national or regional procurement authorities to meet the priority health needs of their populations. Upon concluding its review of all applications, the EML will issue an Executive Summary containing recommendations for inclusion which will then be reviewed by the WHO Director-General. A total of 55 medicines have been submitted for consideration including Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults as well as treatments for cystic fibrosis, muscular spinal atrophy, and methylphenidate for children, among others. A full list can be viewed here: 25th Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines. An open session of the meeting will be held from 10:00-13:00 CEST on Monday, 5 May. Those interested to join can register here: Webinar Registration - Zoom. A news release on the outcomes of this meeting will be issued in due course. Tuesday, 6 May World Asthma Day To mark World Asthma Day 2025, the Global Asthma Network (GAN) will launch the Global Asthma Report 2025: Patient Stories, a compelling collection of stories from people living with asthma around the world. More than 250 million people worldwide are living with asthma – a significant global health burden. This year’s World Asthma Day theme, “Make inhaled treatments accessible for all,” reinforces the urgency of ensuring universal access to affordable, quality-assured asthma medicines. Asthma inhalers are included in the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, are core medicines in the WHO package of essential noncommunicable disease (NCD) interventions for primary health care, and are included in the WHO “Best Buys” for NCDs. Yet some of the basic inhalers (bronchodilators and steroids) are not available, or affordable in many countries. Wednesday, 7 May WHO EPI-WIN Webinar: update on Chikungunya virus disease outbreak: focus on the Indian OceanChikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne RNA virus that causes severe joint pain and fever in the majority of infected patients. Since its first identification in Tanzania in 1952, CHIKV has spread across 110+ countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Increased outbreaks since 2004 are linked to viral adaptations that enhance transmission via Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which also spread dengue and Zika viruses.
