The Roundup

Article Icon 1Severe Storms Hit Austin

Heavy rains and strong winds caused flash floods and damaged power lines Wednesday night in Austin, killing one person and knocking out power to over 70,000 people.

Emergency personnel performed nine water rescues during the storm. Debris was scattered on the Texas Longhorns baseball field, and a window pane fell onto the railing of the State Capitol rotunda.

Over 30,000 people were affected by power outages Thursday morning, and Austin Energy said it might take several days to restore all connections. See photos.

The Austin area has seen deadly Memorial Day weekend floods before. In 2015, at least 12 people died, and over 2,000 homes were destroyed. In 1981, floods killed 13 people and caused more than $35 million in damages.

Article Icon 1High-Profile Bills Die

Several notable bills met their demise in recent days after missing crucial legislative deadlines or failing to gain enough support.

Senate Bill 18, a measure prioritized by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick that would have stripped state funding from municipal libraries that host drag queen story hour readings for children, died when it did not receive a vote in the Texas House on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a constitutional amendment that would have denied bail to illegal immigrants charged with violent crimes failed to receive two-thirds support in the House. A similar proposal targeting certain repeat offenders fell short by three votes the day before.

In the Senate, a Wednesday deadline killed proposals to prohibit minors from having social media accounts and to require the installation of air conditioning in state prisons.

Article Icon 1Actor Building Texas Film Studio

Actor Zachary Levi, known for his roles in the comedy series Chuck and superhero film Shazam!, is launching a 75-acre residential film studio called Wyldwood along the Colorado River in Bastrop.

The $100 million project aims to become a "movement toward meaningful creation," allowing cast and crew to live on site with their families during production. Levi recently became a father, welcoming a son last month with girlfriend Maggie Keating.

In a recent interview with Variety, Levi cast a vision for a "space for artists that will foster certified organic human-made content." He made headlines in 2023 for expressing skepticism about the COVID-19 vaccine and for supporting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s presidential run.

Levi joins other celebrities like Woody Harrelson and Joe Rogan, who have relocated to Texas from Southern California. State film industry incentives of at least $1.5 billion over the next ten years promise to boost the actor's ambitious endeavor.

Hello!

My name is Cole, and I'm the CEO here at The Texas Flyover.

I've had plenty of jobs in my life. Before I found my way into several digital media roles, I had some dirty jobs—the kind that would make Mike Rowe proud. Flowback driver in the oilfield, drywall hauler, medical janitor, home flood restoration tech.

Without a doubt, my favorite job has been running The Texas Flyover.

And not just because it doesn't rain indoors.

I grew up in Flyover Country, and I've felt keenly the way that traditional news media brands have left most of America behind. I believe in the mission of The Texas Flyover: to deliver a free, top-notch news publication without the bias that's driven most of us away from mainstream media.

Every day, I get to come to work to help build something I believe in.

275,000 Texans believe in The Texas Flyover, too, and it's an honor to serve you every day.

If you appreciate what we deliver, would you support us directly?

We're an independent small business, and our advertisers don't completely cover the revenue that we depend on.

I would appreciate a donation. They allow us to keep building the product we believe in!
