Click here ![]() 30 May 2025 | Issue 306 ![]() Saturday, 31 May World No Tobacco Day: Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products On World No Tobacco Day, the World Health Organization launches two new publications on flavours and flavour accessories calling on governments to urgently ban all flavours in tobacco and nicotine products, including cigarettes, pouches, hookahs and e-cigarettes to protect youth from addiction and disease. This year's World No Tobacco Day campaign highlights the manipulative tactics of the industry from product designs to attractive flavours, and glamourized marketing that hide the true dangers of tobacco and nicotine products. Watch the World No Tobacco Day Event here. ![]() 2-4 JuneFifth WHO Global Forum on Medical DevicesThe changing world presents new challenges for medical devices to address, such as climate change, scientific and technological advances, as well as increasing events of crisis and emergencies. Building on the outcomes of previous forums and recent World Health Assembly mandates (Increasing access to medical oxygen, Strengthening diagnostics capacity and Standardization of medical devices nomenclature), the Forum will address pressing challenges such as innovation, regulation, diagnostics, sustainability and crisis preparedness. Sessions will explore best practices, WHO tools and country experiences to support universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. This global event convenes stakeholders from all sectors to discuss improving access to safe, effective, and affordable medical devices across all health systems, including appropriate use of medical devices globally. *************** World Food Safety Day 2025 On 2-4 June 2025, the Nutrition and Food Safety Department of the World Health Organization (WHO) is hosting the WHO Health Talks on Food Safety, a virtual webinar series, to mark the occasion of World Food Safety Day 2025 and explore the theme of this year’s campaign: Food safety: science in action. The series of three webinars will highlight how science drives progress in food safety, covering expert advice, foodborne disease burden estimation, surveillance, laboratory systems and global collaboration, and feature leading voices from WHO and partner institutions. Register here. ![]() Wednesday, 4 June 2024 updates for Health and Environment Scorecards for 183 countries On 4 June, WHO will release the 2024 update of its Health and Environment Country Scorecards, assessing how countries are managing eight major environmental threats to health across sectors. These include air pollution, unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), climate change, loss of biodiversity, exposure to chemicals, radiation, and occupational risks, and environmental risks in and around health care facilities. This year’s edition also introduces a new summary score, offering a concise snapshot of how environmental conditions are impacting health across 183 countries. This update replaces the Scorecards released last year for about 120 countries. An embargoed press conference will be held on 03 June and a media advisory with additional information and dial-in details will be sent journalists closer to the time. The embargo will lift at 09:00 CEST (Geneva time) on 04 June 2025. Once the embargo lifts The Health and Environment Scorecards will be available at https://www.who.int/teams/environment-climate-change-and-health/monitoring/scorecards ![]() Thursday, 5 June 2025 Fourth meeting of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee on the mpox upsurge The fourth meeting of the Emergency Committee for the mpox upsurge, convened by the WHO Director-General under the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), will be held on 5 June 2025. Following their meeting, the Emergency Committee will advise the Director-General as to whether the mpox upsurge still constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). The decision of the Director-General will be shared after the meeting. The Committee’s statement, once issued, will be shared with the media. *********** WHO Civil Society Task Force on TB: Townhall for civil society and affected communities on ending TBOn 5 June, the World Health Organization, in close collaboration with the WHO Civil Society Task Force on Tuberculosis (CSTF-TB), is convening a civil society Townhall on ending TB with a spotlight on the current challenging landscape titled: 'Sustaining the momentum towards ending TB: safeguarding the TB response.’ Worldwide disruptions in TB services due to an abrupt pause or reduction of developmental assistance has put millions of lives at risk. The interactive event, from 13:00-14:00 CEST, with live discussions, will be opened by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and facilitated by members of the CSTF-TB.
