| Preservation Project Begins for USS Arizona The U.S. Navy and National Park Service began a joint preservation project for the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor that includes the removal of its deteriorating mooring platforms. The platforms were put in place in 1942 to help anchor the sunken ship during the salvage of weapons and equipment, and they were not meant to be permanent. Officials said any further deterioration could threaten the ship, which is part of the USS Arizona Memorial and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. A temporary mooring system will be used during removal work to ensure the ship remains undisturbed. The USS Arizona was hit by a Japanese bomb on December 7, 1941, and sank within minutes, killing 1,177 of the 1,512 crewmen aboard. It serves as the final resting place for about 900 sailors. | Airline Enacts Portable Charger Rules Southwest Airlines will require passengers to keep portable chargers in plain sight while in use, citing a rise in the number of lithium-ion battery fires.
When not in use, devices such as phone chargers and power banks must be unplugged and stored. The policy change takes effect on Wednesday.
Southwest is the first U.S. airline to enact such rules, though several Asian airlines took similar actions earlier this year after a fire aboard an Air Busan plane forced 176 people to evacuate before takeoff.
The Federal Aviation Administration reports there have been more than 20 incidents involving lithium batteries this year, following last year's record high of 89. | | |
